State schools in Spain are very good and even if your child speaks no Spanish at all they will be accepted and sat in a class with someone who speaks English. Within a matter of months they will be fluent so no need to worry there!
There are a lot of forms to fill in to get your child into school, it all seems rather daunting at first but as you go through them it is not too bad. We were fortunate to have very good friends that pointed us in the right directions with the paperwork. Also speaking a little bit of Spanish helps too, the Spaniards appreciate it when you try! Your first stop should be your local town hall, they will tell you the forms you need and where to get them from. From then on there is a bit of running about but it is straight forward. I would leave yourself at least 2 mornings to do it all.
You also need an up-to-date medical certificate for the child. This is easily obtainable from your local Centro de Salud (free certificate) or a private doctor (fee payable). A valuable piece of advice with regards to any kind of paperwork in this country is to always take your passport, NIE number and your empadron certificate with you and have at least 3 photocopies of each one too. Passport photographs are needed with most forms so keep them stocked up!
